Job Summary

The Dispatch & Operations Engineer is responsible for executing, analyzing, and optimizing real-time plant operations and grid dispatch activities. The role combines advanced operational control, engineering judgement, performance analysis, and compliance assurance to support safe, efficient, and reliable generation. The position carries engineering-level responsibility for decision-making, incident analysis, data integrity, and continuous improvement, operating under the overall direction of the Operations Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

 

Operations & Dispatch Execution

  • Operate and dispatch power in accordance with the system technical description, approved procedures, and dispatch instructions.
  • Monitor plant operational parameters, alarms, charts, meters, and gauges to ensure stable and safe operation.
  • Execute start-up, shutdown, and switching activities of generators, turbines, and auxiliary equipment under approved instructions.
  • Adjust operational controls as instructed to regulate power flow and respond to grid requirements from KPLC.

Monitoring, Reporting and Data Management

  • Conduct routine checks of equipment and operational parameters to detect early signs of malfunction or abnormal operation.
  • Accurately record operational data, events, and alarms in shift logs and control reports.
  • Maintain reliable and meaningful equipment history records to support engineering analysis.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation and distribution of operational and dispatch reports.

Support to Maintenance and Engineering

  • Coordinate with Maintenance teams during planned and unplanned outages as instructed.
  • Support implementation of maintenance schedules and operational instructions issued by Engineering or Supervisory staff.
  • Participate in incident reporting and provide factual input to investigations and Lessons Learned processes.

Safety, Compliance and Procedures

  • Strictly comply with Kenyan regulatory requirements, PPA obligations, and internal operating procedures.
  • Adhere to Work Permit, Switching, and Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) requirements always.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, abnormal events, or deviations from procedures to the Operations Manager.
  • Act in compliance with LTWP policies and procedures, HSE policies and Golden Rules.
  • Support departmental objectives related to safety, availability, and operational efficiency.

Requirements

1. Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized institution in one of the following disciplines:

  • Electrical Power Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Mechanical or Production Engineering or related field 

2.    Minimum of three (3) years’ relevant experience in power plant operations, dispatch, or power plant control room environments.
3.    Experience in grid-connected generation facilities will be an added advantage.
4.    Knowledge in SCADA is an added advantage.
5.    Valid EBK Certification.
